On Aug. 12, the Dallas Association of Insurance Professionals awarded two $1,000 scholarships to two Texas college students, Julia Rist, who will attend Texas Women’s University this fall, and Zachary Malcomb, who attends Jacksonville Junior College.

The scholarship recipients were acknowledged by Scholarship Committee Chairwoman Shanna Sutton, Specialty Insurance Managers, during the August meeting of the DAIP, held at Carrabba’s Italian Grill.

The scholarship is formally known as the Sibyl Hogue/James Thomas Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Hogue, a longtime DAIP and FIWT member who passed away during the 1977 FIWT Annual Convention on Padre Island. Upon Hogue’s death, James Thomas, owner of Thomas Insurance Agency, started the Sibyl Hogue Memorial Scholarship in her honor, donating money to the DAIP scholarship fund each year until his death in 2017, when the association renamed the scholarship to honor both insurance professionals.

Scholarship recipients are chosen by the DAIP Scholarship Committee from applications that come as a result of email, social media and word of mouth notifications. The committee members review applicants’ academic grades, their extracurricular and community accomplishments, and a personal essay.

Current members keep the scholarship going with fund raisers and donations. FIWT President Wendy Rhoden, Patterson and Associates, attended the event.
